Updates

A number of wild birds have recently died at the Muskegon County Resource Recovery Center (RRC). In coordination with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, samples have been collected and sent for testing for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), also known as bird flu.

The risk of bird flu spreading to people is low but contact with sick or dead birds should be avoided.

Please:
•Do not touch, handle, or move sick or dead birds.
•Keep children and pets away from dead or sick birds.
•Wash your hands after spending time outdoors.
•Do not eat, drink, or smoke while handling wild birds.
•If you hunt or handle wild birds, wear gloves and follow recommended safety precautions.

Bird flu is widespread in wild birds and cases often increase during spring and fall migration. Please use caution and avoid any sick or dead birds you may see.
