The Annual Nest Box Clean-out Day at the Muskegon County Resource Recovery Center will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2024 from 9 a.m. until noon.  County employees and volunteers from area nature clubs as well as the community come together to clean and prepare over 300+ nest boxes for the upcoming nesting season.  The cleaning and repairing of nest boxes before the nesting season begins provides cavity-nesting species such as the Eastern Bluebird and Tree Swallow with quality nesting habitat.  Volunteers will meet at the Maple Island Road entrance to the Muskegon County Resource Recovery Center, 698 N. Maple Island Road.  Volunteers will then be assigned nest boxes to clean in a designated area.  Arrangements can be made for a demonstration on how to properly clean nest boxes on the day of the event for any first-time volunteers.  This event is held in rain, snow, or shine, so please dress accordingly head to toe and bring a pair of work gloves.  Volunteers can bring their own tools (hammer, screws, and nails for minor repairs and a brush to clean nest boxes or nest box cleaning tool kits can be signed out at the day of the event).  This event requires walking outdoors on uneven ground and the soil can sometimes be soft, slippery, or muddy depending on the weather.  If you are interested in volunteering, contact Anita Friend at (231) 724-3457 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday or at [email protected].  This event is a great way to get some fresh air and exercise and learn about cavity nesting birds!
