The Annual Nest Box Clean-out Day event for 2025 at Muskegon County Resource Recovery Center (MCRRC) will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2025 from 9 a.m. – noon.

County employees and volunteers from area nature clubs come together to clean and prepare over 300+ nest boxes for the upcoming 2025 nesting season. Cleaning nest boxes before the nesting season begins ensures cavity nesting species such as the Eastern Bluebird and Tree Swallow have quality nesting habitat.

Volunteers meet at the Maple Island Road entrance to the MCRRC, 698 N. Maple Island Road, Muskegon, MI 49442. Volunteers will be assigned nest boxes to clean in a designated area. First time volunteers will receive instructions on how to properly clean nest boxes the day of the event. This event is held rain, snow, or shine so please dress accordingly and bring gloves. Volunteers may bring their own tools (hammer, screws, nails, etc.) to complete minor repairs on nest boxes and a brush (old paint brushes work great for this) to sweep out old nesting material. Small tool kits will also be available to sign out the day of the event. This event requires walking outdoors over uneven ground and sometimes in soft dirt, mud, or snow. If you are interested in volunteering or have questions, please contact Anita Friend at 231-724-3457 between 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday or at [email protected]

This event is a great way to get some fresh air and exercise and learn about cavity nesting birds!
